ProTint Lamp Black is a black paint tint for latex and acrylic paint. Ultra high strength made with carbon black. A few drops will noticeably darken a quart of light paint.

What Lamp Black is good for

  • Darkening a color a shade or two without buying a new base. Note: Unless you're starting with a deep/accent base, it's impossible to tint a white to black or even dark grey.
  • Grays: Add to white or light bases for pale to medium grays.
  • Off black/near black: for doors, trim, shutters, and furniture, mixed into a deep or accent base.
  • Shadows or aging: slowly add drops as you fade shadows or add depth on sets, props, and faux finishes.

Mixing with Lamp Black

  • White: clean, slightly cool grays.
  • Raw Umber and White: Warm grays/greige.
  • Yellow Oxide: olive and army greens
  • Phthalo Green: forest and hunter greens.
  • Phthalo Blue: navys.

Lamp Black, Raw Umber, or Burnt Umber?

All 3 darken fast. Black will "dull" (dechromatize) the fastest and turns yellows greenish. To darken a warm color try Raw Umber or Burnt Umber instead.

About ProTint

ProTint is our own line of high-strength, water based colorants. It works in latex and acrylic paint, stains, plasters, stuccos, caulks, and more. Each 16oz squeeze bottle has a flip top nozzle for dispensing small amounts without a mess. We recommend weighing your mixes in grams so you can repeat them accurately later. Don't overload your paint/base. Bases always have a maximum tint load and begin to weaken or break. For oil-based paint or lacquer, use Cal-Tint II instead.
