ProTint Burnt Umber is a warm, dark brown tinting colorant. It's made with natural umber that has been "roasted" (calcined), which makes it richer and redder than raw umber.
What Burnt Umber is good for
- Browns like mocha or deep chocolate, in a medium or deep base.
- Wood tones/faux grain alongside Burnt Sienna or Yellow Oxide.
- Antiquing and aging glazes on furniture, cabinets, and props.
- Darkening warm colors without bringing the gray look that black brings (dechromatization).
Mixing with Burnt Umber
- Yellow Oxide: golden brown or oak tone.
- White: mocha, latte, or taupe.
- Burnt Sienna: chestnut or mahogany.
Burnt Umber or Raw Umber?
Burnt Umber is warm and slightly red while Raw Umber is cool and better for greige/taupe or aging that shouldn't look warm. For a lighter, redder brown, try Burnt Sienna.
About ProTint
ProTint is our own line of high-strength, water based colorants. It works in latex and acrylic paint, stains, plasters, stuccos, caulks, and more. Each 16oz squeeze bottle has a flip top nozzle for dispensing small amounts without a mess. We recommend weighing your mixes in grams so you can repeat them accurately later. Don't overload your paint/base. Bases always have a maximum tint load and begin to weaken or break. For oil-based paint or lacquer, use Cal-Tint II instead.
