How to Tint Paint using Cal-Tint: A Step-by-Step Guide

Tinting paint isn't (always) just about adding color; it can also be about transforming a space, setting a mood, or making a statement. When it comes to precision and versatility in paint tinting, Cal Tint colorants are a very strong choice. This guide will walk you through the steps to master the art of paint tinting, ensuring you achieve the perfect hue for your next project.
What You'll Need
Before you begin, gather the following supplies:
- Cal Tint Colorant(or other tint): If you aren't sure what color to pick, there are online tools that can help, but generally you'll want to pick 1-3 colors that surround your target.
- Paint: Select a base paint in the desired sheen and finish.
- Stir Stick: For thorough mixing.
- Measuring Tools: Precision is key, we prefer measuring by weight. Have measuring cups or a digital scale on hand.
- Safety Gear: Wear gloves and eye protection to prevent contact with the colorant.
- Optional: Paint Mixer: An electric paint mixer or drill with a paint-mixing attachment may work better than a stir stick depending on how much you are making.
Step 1: Measure Your Paint
Start by measuring the amount of paint you'll need for your project. While manufacturers may provide mixing ratios, it's often best to start with a smaller amount of colorant and add it gradually. This allows you to have more control over the tinting process and achieve the precise color you desire.
Step 2: Prepare the tint
Before adding Cal Tint to your paint, shake the colorant container thoroughly. This ensures that the pigments are well-mixed and ready for blending with the paint. We recommend shaking the night before, and letting the bottle rest upside down overnight or at least for a few hours.
Step 3: Prepare the Paint
Two options. Either pour the measured amount of paint into a clean/empty paint container, or, after verifying your existing container has enough space, add colorant directly. Ensure that the container is large enough to accommodate the addition of Cal Tint colorant without overflowing. If you need to mix multiple batches, be sure to measure precisely. A digital scale is best in our opinion. Some smaller scales have weight limits around 10lbs which is the average weight of a gallon of paint. If you're in this situation, just measure into a smaller cup first(by weight on the scale) and then add it to your container.
Step 4: Add Colorant
With your safety gear on, carefully add the desired amount of Cal Tint colorant to the paint. Start with a small amount and gradually increase until you achieve your desired color. Remember that a little Cal Tint goes a long way, so add it incrementally for precision.
Step 5: Mix Thoroughly
Using a stir stick, paint mixer, or a drill with a paint-mixing attachment, thoroughly mix the paint and Cal Tint colorant together. Ensure that the colorant is evenly distributed throughout the paint. This step is crucial to achieving a consistent and uniform color.
Step 6: Test the Color
Before applying the tinted paint to your project, it's a good practice to test the color on a small, inconspicuous area or a paint chip. This allows you to verify that the shade matches your expectations and that there are no streaks or inconsistencies.
